Chapter One: From Ireland to Canada — The Making of a Truth-Teller
You might wonder how a girl from rural Ireland ended up as a real estate agent in Toronto, known for her unwavering commitment to honesty. Well, let me take you on a journey through my life because every step of it has shaped who I am today and how I serve you in the complex world of real estate.
I'm Rosalin Smith-Carr, and I grew up as the youngest of nine children in a bustling Catholic household in Ireland. You might think being the baby of the family meant I was spoiled, but in our home, it meant I was the "go-forer." "Rosalin, go for this, go for that," was the constant refrain. But don't feel sorry for me — this role taught me invaluable lessons that serve you today when we work together.
Being the family's "go-forer" honed my listening skills. I learned to pay attention to what people really need, often before they even articulate it themselves. When you're in my office discussing your dream home or the property you're selling, I'm not just hearing your words. I'm listening deeply, picking up on the subtleties, the unspoken desires and concerns.
A Childhood of Learning and Discipline
Growing up in a large family, you learn quickly that resources are limited and you need to be resourceful. My mother, Katherine, was a school principal at a time when most women in Ireland stayed at home. From her, I learned the importance of breaking barriers and not being confined by society's expectations. She instilled in me a sense of gratitude, a joyful way of living, and an always cheerful attitude.
My father, Michael, was an agricultural manager and ran our family farm. He was stern but had a wonderful sense of humour. From him, I learned the value of hard work and responsibility. He also taught me that it's possible to be serious about your work while still finding joy and humour in life.
Both my parents were adamant about education. My mother was determined that all nine of us would be university-educated — a rare ambition in rural Ireland at the time. In our work together, you'll benefit from my constant quest for knowledge. The real estate market is always changing, and I make it my business to stay informed about every new development that might affect your transaction.
From Biochemistry to Real Estate: An Unexpected Journey
After graduating from University College Dublin with a degree in biochemistry, I spent a year working in London before making the bold decision to move to Canada. I was just 21, full of ambition and ready to make my mark on the world. I came to Toronto under contract with the Banting and Best Institute to do medical research.
This scientific background might seem unrelated to real estate, but it's actually a crucial part of how I serve you. My training as a scientist taught me to approach every situation with a "what, where, why, and when" mindset.
After three years in medical research, I ended up working for Bayer as their first female pharmaceutical sales rep for Canada. This experience taught me how to communicate complex information clearly and persuasively.
A Mission Born from Personal Experience
The most significant turning point came when my husband and I decided to buy our first home. What started as a search for a rental turned into a rushed purchase that ended disastrously. The agent took advantage of our inexperience, selling us a property that was far from the "piece of Canada" he promised. We lost all our equity and had to walk away after just 22 months.
This painful experience became the catalyst for my real estate career. I realized that if that agent could make a living doing what he did, I could do much better by actually helping people. I made a vow then and there: "Strike me dead if I ever treat anybody the way I was treated."
I gave up the security of my company car, took out a loan to buy my own vehicle, and dove into real estate full-time. I started knowing nobody in the industry, with no wealthy connections. But I had something more valuable: a mission to do right by every client.
The Truth-Teller in a World of Spin
In an industry often characterized by flashy marketing and empty promises, I stand out as a truth-teller. When you work with me, what you see is what you get. I won't tell you what you want to hear just to get your business. I won't make promises I can't keep or give you unrealistic expectations about your property's value.
When I tell you the true market value of your home, even if it's lower than you hoped, I'm not crushing your dreams. I'm giving you the solid foundation you need to make informed decisions.
Welcome to a real estate journey grounded in truth, empowered by knowledge, and guided by unwavering principles. Let's begin.
